Yalding is a historic village in Kent, located where the Rivers Teise and Beult join the River Medway. Its position at this confluence has shaped much of its character, with three notable bridges crossing the waterways. The Twyford Bridge, a medieval structure, is among the longest in the south-east of England and reflects the village’s long-standing connection to river transport.
The village’s origins trace back to Saxon times, originally known as Twyford. Its name evolved from the Old English “Ealdingas,” referring to an early tribe in the area. Yalding’s medieval heritage is well documented, including its role in the English Civil War, where a significant battle took place at Town Bridge. This bridge, built of ragstone in the 15th century, is reputed to be Kent’s longest medieval bridge, stretching 150 metres.
St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church is a Grade I listed building dating from the 13th century, notable for its ragstone construction and a weather vane dated 1734. The village also features historic buildings such as the Post Office on the High Street and Yalding Baptist Church on Vicarage Road.
Yalding sits on two long-distance footpaths, the Greensand Way and the Medway Valley Walk, offering scenic routes along the rivers and through the village. The Yalding Organic Garden showcases gardening styles spanning 800 years, with plants chosen to reflect their historical periods. The village’s riverside setting and rich history continue to attract visitors interested in Kent’s heritage.
