About Horsted Keynes, West Sussex

Horsted Keynes is a village and civil parish nestled in the Weald of West Sussex, about five miles northeast of Haywards Heath. The village’s name traces back to the Norman knight Willelmus de Cahaines, recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, and is pronounced “CANES.” The 0° meridian passes just a mile east of the village, adding a unique geographical note.

The village is historically significant for hosting what is believed to be Sussex’s earliest organised cricket match in 1624, remembered due to a tragic injury sustained during the game. Horsted Keynes also has a connection to former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, who lived at Birch Grove; notably, U.S. President John F. Kennedy stayed there briefly in 1963.

The local railway station, located three-quarters of a mile from the village, is part of the Bluebell Railway, a heritage line run by volunteers using vintage steam trains. This station once linked East Grinstead to Lewes and had a connection to Haywards Heath until 1963.

St Giles’ Church stands as the Anglican parish church, while the Roman Catholic church of St Stephen remains unoccupied. The surrounding countryside bears traces of an old iron industry, with hammer ponds and place names recalling this past.

Horsted Keynes maintains a rural charm centred on its village green, with a community-run Post Office preserving local services despite the closure of several traditional businesses over recent decades.
