About Alciston, East Sussex

Alciston is a historic village nestled in East Sussex, England, located about ten miles north-west of Eastbourne and seven miles east of Lewes. Its origins trace back to Saxon times when it was known as Aelfsige, and it is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a significant settlement with villagers, smallholders, slaves, and burgesses.

The village church dates from the 14th century and is constructed from chalk sourced from the nearby South Downs. Its dedication remains unknown, but it stands as a testament to Alciston’s medieval heritage. The churchyard is the resting place of the historian C.V. Wedgwood.

One of Alciston’s notable features is its large medieval tithe barn, stretching 170 feet, making it the largest in Sussex. Nearby lie the ruins of a square dovecote built by monks in the 14th century, reflecting the village’s historical connection as a grange of Battle Abbey.

Every Good Friday, the village maintains a unique tradition by closing the road outside the Rose Cottage Inn for a skipping contest, a local custom that adds to Alciston’s character. The village’s landscape and architecture offer a glimpse into its rich past within the Wealden district.
