About Arlington, East Sussex

Arlington, a village and civil parish in East Sussex, lies on the River Cuckmere and has roots dating back to Anglo-Saxon times. Its parish church, dedicated to St Pancras, features architectural elements from this early period, including Anglo-Saxon quoin stones and a splayed window. The church was enlarged in the 13th century, reflecting its long-standing historical significance.

Nearby, Michelham Priory, founded by Augustinians in 1229, stands as a notable medieval site and tourist attraction. The parish also includes Upper Dicker, historically a medieval trade centre, situated along the river.

Arlington Reservoir, opened in 1971, is a conservation area and Site of Special Scientific Interest. It supports a rich bird population, with up to 170 species breeding locally and thousands migrating annually. The reservoir is popular for walking, horse riding, and angling. Another geological highlight is the Lower Dicker quarry, important for studying the ancient river flows of the Weald.

Arlington Stadium, near Michelham Priory, is one of the UK’s longest-running stock car racing venues, established in 1955. It hosts Superstox, Banger racing, and motorcycle speedway events, and is home to the Eastbourne Eagles speedway team. The stadium remains a key feature of the local sporting landscape.
