Berwick is a small village and civil parish in the Wealden district of East Sussex, situated just south of the A27 between Lewes and Polegate. Nestled in the River Cuckmere floodplain and north of the South Downs, it covers an area of 5 square kilometres and had a population of 380 in 2011. The village name, meaning ‘corn farm’, dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086.
The parish church, St Michael and All Angels, is a Grade I listed building with origins possibly predating the 12th century. Its Saxon frontage and 14th-century additions reflect a rich history, while the tower, built in 1603, once featured a spire lost to lightning in 1773. Unique murals painted in 1941 by members of the Bloomsbury Group adorn the interior, depicting local people in biblical scenes, illuminated by clear glass windows installed after World War II bomb damage.
Berwick Station, a small settlement around the railway station two miles north of the village, includes the Berwick Inn pub and a garage. The station lies on the East Coastway Line, linking Glynde and Polegate. The Vanguard Way long-distance footpath passes through this area, connecting Croydon and Newhaven.
Historically, the Ludlay Brick and Tile Company operated near the church from the late 19th century until 1965, with a narrow-gauge tramway linking the clay pit and brickworks. The site remained derelict for decades before access was restricted by the Firle Estate.
The surrounding countryside offers scenic walks, including routes along the South Downs Way. Local paths pass through hedgerows rich in birdlife and wildlife such as wood warblers, grey wagtails, rabbits, and red foxes. Notable landmarks on these walks include the dilapidated New Barn and an old stone farmhouse, both nestled among fields and natural habitats.
