Bishopstone is a rural village nestled within the South Downs National Park in East Sussex. Its name reflects its origins as an episcopal manor, meaning “dwelling place of the bishop.” The village is home to St Andrew’s Church, which dates back to the 8th century and is possibly the oldest church in the county. Above the church porch is an ancient canonical sundial inscribed with the name of Eadric, likely Eadric of Kent from the 7th century.
The village was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a significant settlement with 52 households, ploughland, and pasture. The church itself was rebuilt in 1200, maintaining its historical significance through the centuries. Bishopstone’s village hall, located behind the church, serves as a hub for local activities, including a table tennis club.
Bishopstone railway station, built in 1938, is notable for its distinctive red-brick Charles Holden Art-Deco design. During World War II, an integrated pillbox was added to the station’s roof, providing defensive coverage over Seaford Bay and nearby beaches. The station offers regular train services to Seaford, Lewes, Brighton, Gatwick, and London.
Notable historical figures connected to Bishopstone include the 7th-century saint Leofwynn, poet James Hurdis, and composer Kenneth V. Jones. The village’s rich history is reflected in its ancient architecture and enduring landmarks.
