Crowhurst in East Sussex Village Guide

Jones / French

I am trying to trace information on Charles JONES who married Mary FRENCH in 1833 in Crowshurst. Charles was christened in Battle Sussex in 1813. Mary was born in 1810 in Battle. They have children born in Sussex – Walter, Emma, Caroline . Then the family migrates to Australia aboard the Queen Victoria in 1841, and have further children Charles, Charlotte, Richard, Sarah and Mary Ann.
Parents of Charles b 1813 were Stephen Jones and Charlotte Winbourne.
Charles’ brother David also migrated and became in inn keeper in NSW.
Parents of Mary FRENCH were Benjamin and Mary.
Interested in exchanging information.
Trish

    Dear Patricia,

I am descended from Charles Jones brother David Jones (my great-great grandfather). Charles and David are both descended from John Winborne (1757-1805) and Hannah Waters (1759-?), and Mary Dungate (1747-1780) and Stephen Jones (1740-1824). I have information for the Winborne and Dungate lines back to William Winborn (1672-1719) in Sussex and Thomas Dungate (1637-1670) in Kent but have little other information for the Waters and Jones families. I would be very interested in exchanging information,

    Ben (in Hobart)

    Hi Ben
My husband is Stephen Jones, descendant of Charles Jones – along the line – Walter Jones – Charles Jones – Russell Jones – Allan Jones – Stephen

I have a Jones – Miller tree on ancestry.com which you can view.

I would be glad to exchange information.

Below are the notes I have on David Jones chr 1816
Emigrated on the “England” leaving London 22nd May 1835 arriving Sydney 6th October 1835.

Letter from his mother Charlotte dated July 20th 1850 ,is addressed to David Jones, Weatherboard Inn, Blue Mountains Rd, Sydney NSW .Inkeeper Penrith. The letter seems to indicate that David came to Australia before Charles. His mother had sent a parcel with Charles for David including a silk handkerchief, silver buckle and clothing that belonged to his father.

Letter from his sisters dated 14th Feb 1855 informing him of the death of his mother.

In a transcript from a letter sent by Gloria Harris in 1991,(address 84 Hillview Crescent Whitfield QLD 4870) there is a mention of 2 David Jones in NSW. They were cousins and arrived in NSW about the same time. One had a shop in George Street but the other was a military officer. Dates of 1815 are noted. There is supposed to be a house in Hartley Vale NSW, under the verandah in large letters are the words “David Jones licenced to sell spirituous liquor 1837”

In 1848 there is an application for David Jones to have a liquor Licence ( NSW State Archives Reel 5062. Licence no 553). The application is dated in April, for the year starting July 1st 1848. This is for the establishment known as “The Weatherboard Inn”. The cost of the application was 30 pounds. Later in 1853 – 1858 there are licence applications for an inn known as “The Mount Victoria Inn” or “The Victoria Inn”. ( Reels 5063, 5065, 1238, 1239, 1240, 1256).
    Hope to hear from you

    Hi Rebecca

My line is thru’ Wm Jones who m Maria Stevens and came to Australia. Their dau Mary Ann went to NZ with Samuel Henry Rowe & had 12 children. I descend from the youngest Lucy Ellen Rowe on my fr’s side. My Wm’s parents were John JONES & Phillis EASTON, younger br to Frank’s Stephen. There are heaps of related JONES descendants in NSW as my Wm’s two cousins came to Syd a couple of yrs earlier than him.

Whereabouts are you? I have brought the family full circle as I am in Syd now. I have an Aussie contact in SSX.

    Rowena

Further to my previous posts, I would just like to say that I have added Wm & Maria (Stevens) JONES & their family to the Welcome Wall at the Australian National Maritime Museum. For anyone who might happen to be in Sydney, they are just over halfway down on Panel 74. I’d love to see desc of Charles & David JONES add their names to the Wall.
