INTRODUCTION
East Dean, a picturesque village nestled in the South Downs of East Sussex, England, is steeped in rich history, legendary smugglers, ghostly tales, and notable landmarks. East Dean is a place where history, legend, and the natural beauty of the English countryside converge, offering a captivating experience for all who visit.
I will share this beautiful and charismatic village with you, along with stories of its notorious characters; The Black Monk who is reputed to lure people to their death at Beachy Head; the ghost of the headless smuggler who appears on the trail during & shortly after a harvest moon; and if the wind is in the right direction you may even hear the ghostly cries of the condemned smugglers.

START TIME & MEETING POINT
Meet in the overflow car park opposite East Dean & Friston Village Hall at 7:45 pm, where you’ll be met by your guide Larry. The ‘what three words’ location of the meeting place is ā ///coder.proves.deposits. The walk will start promptly at 8:00 pm.
DRESS APPROPRIATELY
ā Sturdy footwear is a must due to the terrain of the walk.
ā Ensure you have warm clothing as the evenings can be chilly, even in summer.
ā Be aware of the weather forecast for the day of your walk so you come prepared with anything else you may need.
ABOUT THE WALK
The walk takes approx 90 minutes and covers about 1.2 miles. The walking pace will be moderate with frequent stops for the guide to tell you about the local Ghosts & Smugglers.
TERRAIN OF THE WALK
The tour is along a mixture of terrains including pavements, unpaved paths, residential roads, grass verge and a path with a steep descent. There is also a style to climb over.
