Eridge Green is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest located north-east of Crowborough in East Sussex. Covering 8.4 hectares, it forms part of the larger 44-hectare Eridge Rocks nature reserve, managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust. The area is characterised by ancient woodland growing on clay soil, interspersed with striking sandstone outcrops.
These sandstone cliffs rise up to ten metres high, creating a distinctive landscape within the reserve. The rocky areas support a variety of specialised flora, including the Tunbridge filmy fern and several moss species such as Dicranum scottianum and Orthodontium gracile. Liverworts like Scapania umbrosa, Scapania gracilis, and Harpanthus scutatus also thrive here, highlighting the site’s ecological importance.
Access to Eridge Green is available from Warren Farm Lane, allowing visitors to explore this unique natural environment. The combination of ancient woodland and sandstone cliffs offers a rare habitat that supports diverse plant life, making it a valuable site for conservation and nature study.
