Groombridge is a village straddling the border between Kent and East Sussex, with a history dating back to Saxon times. Its name originates from Groman, a tribal leader responsible for maintaining the bridge over the stream now called The Grom. The village’s early significance is marked by two Royal Charters: one in 1239 permitting the building of a chantry chapel, and another in 1286 granting a weekly market and annual fair.
A key historic site is Groombridge Place, a manor first recorded in 1239 and once owned by notable families including the de Cobhams and Sir Richard Waller. The manor’s estate has evolved over centuries, with connections to the Earls of Dorset and John Packer, who built a chapel in 1625 as a thanksgiving for the failure of Prince Charles’ Spanish marriage plan.
The village’s railway heritage is preserved through the Spa Valley Railway, with Groombridge station serving as the southern terminus. The station retains historical features such as canopies from Gravesend West station and a newly constructed signal box, reflecting its past on the Three Bridges to Tunbridge Wells Central Line.
Burrswood, once part of the Groombridge Place estate, operated as a Christian health and wellbeing centre from 1948 until its closure in 2019. It specialised in palliative and rehabilitative care, offering a unique blend of medical and spiritual support.
Groombridge’s two churches, St John in Old Groombridge and St Thomas in New Groombridge, reflect the village’s split between Kent and East Sussex, each belonging to different dioceses. The village’s historic market and fair traditions, including the dramatic finale of rolling blazing tar barrels, highlight its rich local culture.
