Hartfield is a village and civil parish in East Sussex, nestled on the northern edge of Ashdown Forest. The parish includes the settlements of Colemans Hatch, Hammerwood, Holtye, Marsh Green, and Newbridge. The village itself lies on the upper reaches of the River Medway and is intersected by a Roman road from London to Lewes.
The village has a rich history, with mentions in the Domesday Book and connections to the Dukes of Dorset. Notable buildings include St Mary the Virgin’s Church, dating back to the 13th century, and Popes Cottage, reputedly built in 1236. Hartfield is also famous for its links to A.A. Milne, author of the Winnie the Pooh books, with Cotchford Farm nearby and a dedicated Pooh-themed shop and café in the village.
Hammerwood, part of the parish, is known for its iron industry heritage and features St Stephen’s Church and Hammerwood Park, a Grade I listed country house designed by Benjamin Latrobe. Hammerwood Park was once owned by Led Zeppelin and is now restored, open to the public, and hosts concerts.
The hamlet of Newbridge holds the remains of England’s earliest blast furnace from around 1496, alongside an 18th-century corn mill and mill house. Ashdown Forest, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, partially lies within the parish, offering semi-natural woodland, heath, and bog landscapes.
Hartfield’s former railway station is now a pre-school, and the old trackbed forms part of National Cycle Route 21, popular with walkers and cyclists.
