About Horam, East Sussex

Horam is a village and civil parish in East Sussex, located three miles south of Heathfield within the Wealden District. The parish includes the settlements of Vines Cross and Burlow. The village developed around a railway station originally named ‘Horeham Road for Waldron’, which closed in 1965. The village itself was known as Horeham before adopting the name Horam in 1925.

Situated on the slopes of the Weald, Horam features several headwater streams of the River Cuckmere, with the Waldron Ghyll valley being a notable landscape feature. The former railway line has been transformed into the Cuckoo Trail footpath, offering scenic walking routes through the village.

Horam is served by the Eastbourne Bus Company, providing local transport links. Religious life centres on Christ Church, the local Church of England parish church located in Horebeech Lane. Vines Cross once had a small church dedicated to St James, which no longer exists.

Education in Horam includes Maynards Green Primary School and St Mary’s School, a secondary day and residential special school situated at Maynards Green. The village has historical ties to the Wealden iron industry and was home to author and naturalist Walter J.C. Murray, who documented his experiences and garden sanctuary in the area.
