About Laughton, East Sussex

Laughton is a village in East Sussex, located five miles east of Lewes. It appears in the Domesday Book and is notable for nearby Roman remains, reflecting its long history. The village sign, known as the “Village of the Buckle,” commemorates a 1545 event when Nicholas Pelham led local men to repel a French fleet attempting to land at Seaford Bay. The area of this skirmish is now called The Buckle.

All Saints Church, dating back to the 13th century, is a key landmark. It is the burial place of Henry Pelham and Thomas Pelham-Holles, 18th-century Prime Ministers and local landowners. Laughton Manor, a Grade II listed building constructed between 1760 and 1780, adds to the village’s historic character.

The parish includes Park Corner Heath, an 8.7-acre Site of Special Scientific Interest. This area of grassy heath, scrub, and woodland supports a variety of moth and butterfly species, highlighting the village’s natural heritage.
