Maresfield is a village and civil parish located in East Sussex, just north of Uckfield. The parish includes nearby villages such as Nutley and Fairwarp, as well as parts of Ashdown Forest. The village’s name likely derives from Old English, combining “mere” meaning pool and “feld” meaning open land.
Historically, Maresfield played a significant role in the Wealden iron industry. In the 16th century, five iron furnaces operated within a few miles of the village church, including Oldlands and Maresfield powder mills. The Levett family were prominent ironmasters here, with ties to supplying armaments to Henry VIII. A Roman settlement with a bloomery once existed in the area, and a Norman village developed around the church founded circa 1100.
Maresfield Park House and its estate dominated the village until the First World War, when the government requisitioned the land for military use, creating Maresfield Camp. The estate was later sold off, with parts developed as married quarters for soldiers.
The village features the Grade II* listed 17th-century Chequers Inn and a recreation ground gifted in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. This ground hosts the Maresfield Cricket Club, established in 1756. Nearby Rock Wood, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, contains rare mosses and ferns along its stream.
Maresfield lies at the junction of the A22 and A272 roads, with a bypass to the west. The parish includes Nutley, with its church dedicated to St James the Less, and Fairwarp, home to Christ Church. The surrounding landscape is enriched by Ashdown Forest, historically a royal deer hunting reserve.
