About Mayfield, East Sussex

Mayfield, nestled in the High Weald of East Sussex, is a village steeped in history and tradition. Each September, it hosts a carnival commemorating four Protestants executed in 1556, featuring torchlit processions and a bonfire, part of the Sussex bonfire tradition. The village was once a hub of the Wealden iron industry, with many fine houses dating from that era.

The Anglican church of St Dunstan, founded around 960 CE, is notable for its Perpendicular style and iron graves of local ironmasters. Legends link St Dunstan to the village, including a tale of him confronting the devil. Mayfield also has a Roman Catholic church, a Free Church, and a Baptist chapel.

Argos Hill, located between Mayfield and Rotherfield, is known for its Grade II* listed windmill built in the 19th century. The windmill was restored in the 1960s and remains a local landmark.
