Mountfield is a village and civil parish located in the Rother district of East Sussex, England, approximately three miles north-west of Battle. The village is steeped in history, being mentioned in the Domesday Book, and features the parish church dedicated to All Saints.
The parish includes the linear settlement of Vinehall Street, home to the independent Vinehall School, and the nearby hamlet of Johns Cross, where Mountfield and Whatlington Church of England Primary School is situated close to the A21 and A2100 roads. Local governance is managed by the Mountfield parish council, which oversees amenities such as playing fields and a children’s play area.
Mountfield is notable for two Sites of Special Scientific Interest within its parish boundaries. The River Line is recognised for its geological significance, showcasing layers from the late Jurassic and early Cretaceous periods. Darwell Wood, a broadleaved woodland with several streams feeding into Darwell Reservoir, is valued for its biological interest.
Nearby, the remains of Glottenham Castle lie two miles north-west of the village. This twelfth-century fortified manor house, now overgrown, is surrounded by a mostly dry moat, offering a glimpse into the area’s medieval past.
