Could anybody tell me if there is still a Well House Cottage in the village? My husband’s grandfather was born there.

Yes there is a Well House on the A28 as you approach Mill Corner from Hastings.
Jenny, if you can contact
[reveal email] i have several old photos and history of Well House

Hi Jenny,
This is a very long shot.
I have ancestors that are reported to have lived in the Well House in Northiam. A Charles Poile.
If in any chance, you are still on this board or email, please let me know if your ancestor is the same.
Steve
Steven, My Great Aunt Frances Annie Poile used to live in No 1 Well House Cottages. I have a sketchy family tree that shows a Charles Henry Poile who married a Georgiana Bates and who is part of our Barnes family history. I would be interested in further information. Neil Barnes
Hi Neil,
Thanks for your message.
Yes, I see a Frances Annie “Fanny” Poile, born on 13 Feb 1885 in Northiam, Sussex, England.
She lived in Well House according to the 1891 census.
Her gravestone can be found in Northiam with the inscription:
Frances Annie Poile
Born 13 February 1885
Died 15 July 1969
The last in Northiam to bear the surname of Poile.
I recall seeing it when last in Northiam.
Fanny appeared in the 1939 Registration of England & Wales at 1 Well House Cottage in
Northiam, Sussex, England. Her occupation is given as an Unpaid Domestic Duties.
Listed in the following household:
Albert Barnes – born: 8 July 1881 – widow – Agricultural Worker
Harold W Barnes – born: 31 May 1917 – Grocer’s Assistant Van Driver
Jessica P Barnes – born: 25 February 1913 – Book Keeping Clerk
Her father was indeed Charles Henry Poile born 1838 (married to Georgina Bates, lots of offspring)), whose father in turn was Thomas Poile born 1804, both in Northiam.
I would be interested in your family tree back to Frances, Charles. It is interesting to see her mentioned in the Barnes household in 1939.
I in turn would be happy to provide further details from my tree.
I can set up a temporary email address to allow exchange of real details, avoiding putting email addresses on here.
Regards
Steve
Hi Steve, Thanks for your post. We are talking about the same people and places. Now I am a bit hazy as to who exactly lived where around 1900 so that is something we can no doubt discover.
Yes, if you can set up a temporary email address to allow exchange of real details that would be fantastic. I am afraid I am a bit of a novice in these sort of things so you will need to let me know exactly what you need me to do.
Regards
Neil Barnes
