Northiam in East Sussex Village Guide

Family History

My mother was born in Northiam in 1910, she had no father. All we know is is her mother worked in the big house. Her grandmother brought her up. My mother’s name was Edith Stevens. She met my Father, Frederick Loring, in Northiam. They married in 1935. They lived in farm cottages. If anyone has any info on the Stevens family please contact me. My grandmother was also Edith Stevens, she never married.

My Great Grandmother was a Harriet Poile who married Harry Hemstead in 1908. I am not sure of the link but there was a Mrs C Poile who lived at Well House because I have a postcard addressed to Mrs Poile from Harry, my Nan Elsie Hemstead (Harry & Harriets) daughter lived in Shoreham Cottage Northiam. I also have a postcard with a picture of the plaque in memory of those who died in 1914-18 and there is a William Poile MM on it.

    Hello Kevin, Sally & Carol.
We are all cousins of some kind: Kevin & Sally are descended from Thomas POILE, b.1843, son of Thomas & Harriet Poile; Carol & I from his brother Charles Henry, b.1838.
My grandmother was Judith Jane POILE, sister of William, Harriet, Edward Ted) and several others.
I remember visiting Elsie HEMSTEAD at Shoreham Cottage when she lived there with her brother Frank. Ted married Carrie BARNES (Mrs.C.Poile).
I have more info. on this family, and further back,

    Regards,
    Mary

Mervyn – The Poile Brother Bakers were my Grand Uncles – If the society is interested I have photos of them outside their shop. I also have the School Certificates my Grand-father (Charles Edward Poile) got for passing his yearly exams at School. Let me know if you are interested in any of the above.

    Hi
I have come across this thread somewhat belatedly.
You may be interested in a new One Name study for the Poile surname which can be found here.
