I am descended from James RANGER c1697 – 1772. I have his will in which he bequeaths his house in 2 parts to his sons, Thomas and Jasper. He describes the house as by the “Kings Highway from Northiam Windmill to Ewhurst to the Little House”. He then bequeaths some land to his daughter “streight (sic) down from the lane south to Mill Down Hedge” He also mentions “The Mill Down House”. Can anyone pin point where this road/lane might be? I note that Northiam appears to have had 3 windmills, one burnt down and 2 demolished.

Hi, I am also realted to James as he is my great,great,great … grandfather. I have been up to Northiam recently as still live in East Sussex after travelling the world.
A lot of the old houses from James era have long gone but I am reliably informed that they lived near Mill Corner and Ewhurst Lane.
They were originally Anabaptists so there is no birth records due to their beliefs.
From the digging I have done I think the Ranger’s fled Holland in the 1500’s because of this.
Remember the name probably sounded different because the great vowel shift was on the go.
Ranger was probably pronounced RAN-GAR . The written A changed sound.
My lot stayed in Northiam until my great x 3 moved to London for work.
