I am researching the Selmes families (from anywhere, anytime)and recently have been looking at the family of Thomas Lancaster and his wife Ann Selmes who married at Westfield in early 1739. They had a family of 6 children and lived at Peasmarsh.
Thomas had a brother Charles Lancaster who married Mary Patience in 1743 and they too lived at Peasmarsh raising a large family.
If you have connections to these families I may be able to help with info.
Best wishes

Thank you for this opportunity to further my tree. I have no birth date for Ann Selmes and only 5 children for her John b 1744,d1802, Elizabeth b 1747, William,b 1750, Charles,b 1753 d1807,& Sarah b 1756, I would be grateful for more?. Charles and Mary Patience Mary was only 12 when she married? I look forward to hearing from you Regards Fay Lancaster Purves
Hello Fay
Ann Selmes was born at Brede 1717, parents Walter Selmes and Sarah Pain.
The child of Thomas Lancaster and Ann Selmes that you are missing is the eldest child – Mary Lancaster born 1739 at Westfield. She married Nicholas Russell at Herstmonceux, Sussex in 1769.
Charles Lancaster married Mary Patience at Peasmarsh in 1743. I have a baptism for Mary Patience at Peasmarsh in 1723 so she would have been about age 20 at marriage, not 12. Where does 12 come from?
Also I have John Lancaster’s year of death as 1801 not 1802.He was buried at Peasmarsh on 17 May 1801. There is no burial for a John Lancaster at Peasmarsh in 1802.
Do you connect through the line of Ann Selmes and Thomas Lancaster?
Best wishes
Caroline

Hello Fay
I have sent a message to you via Ancestry.

Hello
I came across several old messages you had left online about the Lancasters and Selmes families. I believe I am connected to Charles Lancaster’s (bap. 1753) through his daughter Ann bap 1776 and her marriage to William Sands. My understanding of this line is limited as we had disregarded any connection with the Lancasters on the basis Ann was Charles’s first wife and we were descended from a daughter, Caroline, from his marriage to his second wife, Mary. This doesn’t appear to be the case as the DNA results on Ancestry show connections to descendants of a sister of Charles and two of his other daughters.
Any help you are able to give would be gratefully received. Dianne
Hello Dianne
Anne Lancaster daughter of Charles Lancaster and Sarah (maiden name Harmer) was baptised at Herstmonceux, Sussex on 15 February 1776.
As far as I can see this Charles did not have a daughter called Caroline.
Best wishes,
Caroline
Hello Caroline
Thank you for responding.
Charles’s daughter, Anne, married a William Sands and his daughter is Caroline Sands who I am descended from. The puzzling thing is the DNA connects us to Anne’s aunts and her father’s sister as far as we can tell but this would have meant she gave birth to Caroline when she was in her 50s. We are related to Charles’s wife Susan Harmer too but this doesn’t account for the connection with Charles’s sister’s descendants. Do you have a confirmed death or burial date for Anne?
Regards,
Dianne
When and where was Caroline Sands born?
Best wishes,
Caroline
Hello Dianne,
Caroline Sands was born and baptised in 1830 at Heathfield, daughter of William and Mary. Clearly she can’t be the daughter of Anne Sands (Anne Lancaster b 1776 daughter of Charles Lancaster).
There was another Caroline Sands in the area b1830 at Mayfield dau of William Sands and Philadelphia Jarrett.
Just mentioning.
Best wishes,
Caroline
Hi,
She was born 20 Aug 1830 and baptised on 10 Oct 1830 at the independent Non Conformist Chapel Heathfield. The mother is given as Mary. Dianne
Answering my own question – There was a Caroline Sands born at Heathfield, Sussex in 1830 and baptised at Heathfield Independent Chapel 1830, daughter of William Sands and Mary.
Also a Caroline Sands bap at Mayfield, Sussex in 1830, daughter of William Sands and Philadelphia.
Clearly your Caroline Sands couldn’t have been the daughter of Anne(Lancaster).
There was another connection to Harmer – Charles Lancaster’s sister Sarah Lancaster (b1756 at Peasmarsh) married a John Harmer at Herstmonceux in 1773. This could be where your DNA Match is coming from.
Best wishes,
Caroline
Thomas Lancaster and Anne Selmes were my 7th great grand parents.
I would love information about Thomas’ parents. And to see records would be amazing.
Was Thomas really the 6th Thomas Lancaster? That’s what all the trees say online, but I can’t find any record of who his parents were or when and where he was born.
Hi Katie, I am the 5th Grt Granddaughter of Thomas and Ann Selmes. My name is Fay (nee Lancaster) Purves. His Father was Thomas b 18 Mar 1686, and his wife as best as I have sourced Elizabeth Vezy b .FHL Film 1067241
married 17 Feb 1708 St Thomas, Lewes, Sussex. I have a tree on Ancestry that you can look at. Lancaster~DNA or email me at [reveal email] Regards
Hi Fay 🙂 Thank you for the response.
It seems our trees do not match up. As I have my 6th ggm Sarah Lancaster (daughter of Thomas and Anne) as being born in Peasmarsh like her siblings, and marrying my 6th ggf John Harmer.
You have her as being born in Battle marrying a Henry Martin
