About Pevensey, East Sussex

Pevensey is a historic village and civil parish in East Sussex, located five miles north-east of Eastbourne and just inland from Pevensey Bay. The village sits on a spur of sand and clay, once a Roman peninsula surrounded by tidal lagoons and marshes. The nearby Pevensey Levels are a large nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to rare plants and invertebrates like the fen raft spider.

The village is famed for its Roman fort, Anderitum, built in the 4th century as part of the Saxon Shore defences. This fort later became Pevensey Castle, a Norman stronghold established shortly after the 1066 Conquest. William the Conqueror landed here, making Pevensey a key site in English history. The castle’s walls and gatehouse remain prominent features, cared for by English Heritage.

Pevensey Bay, the seaside settlement within the parish, offers a shingle beach and two Martello towers dating from the Napoleonic era. The bay has a history of smuggling and coastal defence, with the beach providing vital protection against flooding. The area is also the starting point of the 1066 Country Walk, a long-distance footpath exploring local historic sites.

The village retains a number of listed historic buildings, including the Grade I St Nicolas Church and the Grade II* Old Mint House. Pevensey has inspired artists and writers such as J. M. W. Turner and Rudyard Kipling, who referred to it as “England’s Gate” due to its pivotal role in the nation’s past.

Transport links include the A259 road and two railway stations, Pevensey and Westham, and Pevensey Bay. The village supports local sport with a sailing club and cricket team, reflecting its vibrant community life.
