Rotherfield is a historic village and civil parish in East Sussex, nestled within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village sits atop a hill where the River Rother originates, a river that drains much of the county. Rotherfield’s name likely derives from the Anglo-Saxon term for cattle lands, reflecting its early agricultural roots.
The parish includes three villages: Rotherfield itself, Mark Cross, and Eridge. Rotherfield’s 11th-century sandstone parish church of St Denys stands on the site of an earlier timber church dating back to 792 AD. The church features a 15th-century tower and spire, reconstructed with a steel frame after storm damage in 1987. The village became a royal hunting estate during the reigns of Alfred the Great and William Rufus.
Eridge, located on a sandstone ridge near the Kent border, is known for Eridge Castle, originally a Gothic mansion converted in the late 18th century and later replaced by a Neo-Georgian house. The surrounding Eridge Park is a Grade II* listed landscape with dense woodland and ornamental follies. Mark Cross lies to the east of Rotherfield and features Walter’s Mill, a windmill converted into a residence.
The parish is rich in natural heritage, with Bream Wood designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its unique fern and moss species. Rotherfield has been recognised for its conservation area status, preserving the quality of its historic buildings and rural character. The village also hosts the Rotherfield Millennium Green, a community-managed open space established in 2000.
