Uckfield, East Sussex

Uckfield is a historic town in East Sussex, situated on the River Uck at the southern edge of the Weald. Its name, first recorded in 1220 as “Uckefeld,” means “open land of a man called Ucca,” reflecting its Anglo-Saxon origins. The town grew around a river crossing and was once a key stop on a pilgrimage route linking Canterbury, Chichester, and Lewes.

The town centre features notable historic sites such as Bridge Cottage, dating back to around 1436 and now a museum, and Church Street, home to buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Uckfield’s development has expanded through several housing estates, with careful planning to limit new homes and preserve green spaces.

Uckfield is prone to flooding due to its river location, with significant events recorded since 1852. Flood defences have been implemented, including a flood wall near the town’s Waitrose car park. The town is also known for its natural reserves, including West Park and Hempstead Meadows, which offer diverse habitats and wildlife.

The town has connections to notable figures such as author Frank Tuohy and singer Rag’n’Bone Man. Local folklore includes tales of Lord Lucan’s disappearance and the nearby Piltdown Man hoax.
