West Firle, officially known as Firle, is a village steeped in history located in East Sussex, just four miles east of Lewes. The name Firle derives from an Old English word meaning overgrown with oak, reflecting its ancient woodland roots. The village is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Ferla’ and was once part of the estate of Robert, Count of Mortain, half-brother to William the Conqueror.
Firle Place, the manor house at the heart of the village, has been the seat of the Viscount Gage family since the late 15th century. The estate’s history is intertwined with notable Sussex families such as the Levett and Bolney families. The village also played a quiet role during the Second World War when Firle Plantation served as a secret base for a Home Guard Auxiliary Unit.
St Peter’s Church is a focal point of historical interest, housing an alabaster effigy of Sir John Gage and his wife Philippa, alongside a striking stained-glass window by John Piper. The churchyard is the resting place of several members of the Bloomsbury Group, including Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, linking Firle to a significant cultural heritage.
The surrounding landscape features the South Downs and Firle Beacon, a chalk hill rising to 712 feet, once part of a warning system during the Spanish Armada. The area also contains Bronze Age burial barrows, adding to the village’s rich archaeological significance.
Firle’s long-standing cricket club, founded in 1758, is among the oldest in the country, reflecting the village’s enduring community spirit. The Ram Inn, the sole surviving original public house, once served as a court room and resting stop on a historic coach road.
