Egerton is a village nestled on the Greensand Ridge in Kent, stretching southwards into the plains near the West Stour. The parish features a narrow escarpment of dense Greensand to the north, where the main residential area lies, with two named woods gracing the northern slopes. Below, the landscape opens into mixed farmland and hedgerows, dotted with farmsteads and bordered by woodland buffers.
At the heart of the village stands the 13th-century parish church dedicated to Saint James, a Grade I listed building noted for its exceptional heritage. Nearby, Egerton House and a Saxon burial mound add to the village’s historical interest, reflecting its deep-rooted past.
Egerton once hosted Escape Studios, where the Scottish rock band Nazareth recorded part of their 1975 album Hair of the Dog. The village’s former bakery gained fame as a filming location for the 1990s television series The Darling Buds of May.
The Greensand Way footpath passes through the churchyard, inviting walkers to explore the scenic surroundings. The settlement of Stonebridge Green lies adjacent to Egerton’s centre, forming part of the scattered rural parish.
