Hamstreet is a village in Kent, situated six miles south of Ashford along the A2070. The village mainly lies within the parish of Orlestone, with part extending into Warehorne parish. Its population was recorded as 1,988 in 2021, likely higher now. The parish church, dedicated to the Good Shepherd, serves both Anglican and Methodist congregations.
Historically, Hamstreet was a small hamlet known as ‘Ham’ until the railway arrived in 1851. The village expanded significantly in the 20th century and gained recognition in 1991 when its historic maps featured on postage stamps celebrating 200 years of the Ordnance Survey. The village also appeared in a BBC Countryfile episode and a Blue Peter mountaineering spoof.
Surrounding Hamstreet are two large public woodlands, Ham Street Woods and Orlestone Forest, both designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest. These woodlands are remnants of the ancient Weald forest. Nearby, the Royal Military Canal, the UK’s third longest defensive structure, runs half a mile south of the village. Several long-distance footpaths cross the parish, including the Saxon Shore Way, Greensand Way, and the Royal Military Canal Path, making it popular with walkers and cyclists.
Ham Street railway station, opened in 1851, is noted for its Italianate red brick design by William Trees. The village was bypassed by the A2070 in 1994 and is now on the B2067, with bus services connecting Ashford and Romney Marsh. Despite some loss of traditional shops since the 1970s, Hamstreet retains a range of amenities including shops, eateries, a school, medical facilities, and sports venues. The village is twinned with Thérouanne in northern France.
