My grandmother’s youngest sister, born in Canterbury, was given away when her mother died in child birth.I’ve discovered that she was christened, Hilda, Lizzie Grace Whiddett at High Halden parish church 20.12.1903. My grandmother told my mother that the people who had the baby ran The George public house in Bethesden. Can anyone throw light on this please?

Hilda’s parents were John Whiddett and Emma(nee Dadd). She appears in the 1911 census as ‘daughter’ of her maternal uncle Edward William Dadd and Elizabeth nee Hughes at George Inn, Bridge Street, Wye. Her name is transcribed in error as Hilda Elisabeth Whiddett Dodd.
Thanks Al,
That is brilliant, a great help. Your timing was brilliant too. I got your message as I was leaving Bournemouth for Canterbury to see my mother. This evening I went to Wye and found the former ‘The George.’
Now I want to find whatever happened to Hilda. I wonder which names she used. Grace wasn’t on her birth certificate, and she may have given up Whiddett for Dadd, again, thank you so much.
Howard,
Glad this information was of use for you and have subsequently found out by looking at our family tree, that you are my third cousin once removed!
As it looks like you want to continue looking into your family history, can I suggest that you sign up to www.rootschat.com where I and many other people will be able to be able to provide more information concerning Hilda and other family members for you.
Thank you Al. I’ll do that. I have all the birth certificates of Hilda’s 12 siblings, including my gran. Some family trees I have seen have erroneous siblings and siblings missing. Some people do not do their research. Again thank you so much.
