Ivychurch is a small village and civil parish situated on the Romney Marsh in Kent, approximately three miles north-west of New Romney. Despite its extensive parish boundaries stretching to the Kent ditch, the population remains around 170, with half residing in the village itself. The parish’s unusual shape reflects the historic drainage of marshland from the 12th century onwards.
The village is home to St. George’s Church, often called ‘the Cathedral of Romney Marsh’ due to its impressive size and architecture. Mainly dating from the 14th century, the church features a seven-bay arcade in the late Decorated style, with a Perpendicular tower added about a century later. Remnants of an earlier 13th-century church are visible, including Caen stone and wave-rolled flints, hinting at the nearby English Channel. The nave is notably open and versatile, hosting exhibitions, concerts, barn dances, and the annual Harvest Supper.
The north aisle of St. George’s has been restored and now serves as a Museum of Rural Life, preserving local heritage. The Bell Inn, the village pub, acts as a hub for community events, supporting local morris dancing groups and musicians. It is also known for its popular annual beer and cider festival.
Main Street, once part of the B2070 road connecting New Romney to Ashford, has been downgraded since the 1990s, adding to the village’s quiet charm. Ivychurch’s blend of historic architecture and community spirit makes it a distinctive spot on the Romney Marsh.
