About Langley, Kent

Langley is a village and civil parish located in the Maidstone District of Kent, England. Its name originates from the Old English term “lang leah,” meaning ‘long field or woodland,’ and it was first recorded in 814 as Longanleag. The village lies along the A274 road, connecting Maidstone to Headcorn, and is situated about three miles from the county town.

The village church, dedicated to St Mary, stands near a lake historically linked to the medieval judicial practice of trial by cold water. This practice involved determining innocence or guilt by whether the accused floated or sank in the water, which was considered holy due to its proximity to the church. Maidstone Museum & Art Gallery holds artefacts from a walled Roman cemetery excavated in Langley, indicating the area’s ancient historical significance.

Langley is surrounded by natural features such as Langley Heath and Abbey Wood, a nearby woodland. The village also has a playing field with space for football pitches and recreational facilities.
