About Otterden, Kent

Otterden is a small village and civil parish nestled in the Kent Downs within the borough of Maidstone. Its history stretches back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as part of the lands held by Adam FitzHubert. The entry details the agricultural nature of the manor, including ploughland, meadow, woodland, and livestock.

The village holds a notable place in the history of science. In 1729, Stephen Gray and Granville Wheler conducted pioneering experiments on the conduction of electricity over long distances at Wheler’s estate in Otterden. This work contributed significantly to the early understanding of electrical phenomena.

Between 1933 and 1948, Otterden was home to the Bunce Court School. Founded by Anna Essinger, the school was relocated from Germany to England following the rise of the Nazi Party. It served as a refuge and educational institution during a turbulent period in European history.

Otterden’s landscape and historical significance make it a point of interest for those exploring the Kent countryside and its scientific heritage.
