Sandwich, Kent

Sandwich, located in Kent, is a historic town with a population of just under 5,000. Once a major port and part of the Cinque Ports, it now lies two miles inland due to the silting of the Wantsum Channel. The town boasts many original medieval buildings, including listed pubs, churches, almshouses, and the White Mill, a restored windmill dating back to 1760.

The town’s rich history includes the 14th-century Fisher Gate, the only surviving medieval town gate, and the Barbican, a 14th-century toll house with distinctive round towers. Sandwich Guildhall, built in 1579, houses a museum featuring original copies of the Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest from 1300. The Guildhall’s Tudor courtroom remains in use for civic events and weddings.

Sandwich Bay is renowned for its nature reserves and two world-class golf courses, Royal St George’s and Prince’s, both linked to The Open Championship. The area supports diverse wildlife habitats, including wetlands and salt marshes, with Monk’s Wall nature reserve and Gazen Salts Local Nature Reserve nearby.

The town’s cultural heritage is also tied to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, after whom the sandwich food item is named. Annual events include the Sandwich Festival, featuring markets, concerts, and parades. Sandwich is well connected by rail and road, with local bus services linking it to Canterbury, Ramsgate, and Dover.

Religious sites include St Bartholomew’s Chapel, St Peter’s Church with Norman features, and the Anglican parish church of St Clement, notable for its 12th-century tower. The town’s Flemish and Huguenot heritage is evident in its architecture and historical community contributions.
