Tonbridge is a historic market town in Kent, England, situated on the River Medway, just north of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Its origins date back to the Domesday Book of 1086, with a name possibly derived from an Anglo-Saxon personal name or the many bridges once crossing its streams. The town is renowned for Tonbridge Castle, a Norman motte and bailey fortress built in the 11th century, which played a strategic role through medieval times.
The town’s medieval core still features buildings from the 15th century, including the Port Reeves House. Tonbridge School, founded in 1552, is a prominent independent school with a rich history. The town was also notable for its involvement in the English Civil War and later became known for Tunbridgeware, finely inlaid wooden items popular with visitors to nearby Tunbridge Wells.
Despite its growth, Tonbridge retains a market town atmosphere, with a High Street offering a mix of shops, cafes, and traditional businesses. The River Medway and surrounding floodplains shape the town’s geography, with flood defences in place following significant flooding events.
Cultural highlights include the Oast Theatre housed in a converted oast house and the River Centre, a community and conference venue. Tonbridge also has historical connections to notable figures such as geneticist Reginald Punnett and cricketer Frank Woolley.
