Heathfield is a market town in East Sussex, England, known locally as “Heffle.” It sits near the junction of the A267 and A265 roads, roughly equidistant from Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne. The town had a population of 7,667 in 2021 and forms part of the parish of Heathfield and Waldron.
Historically, Heathfield developed around an ancient trackway linking the South Downs with the Weald. The manor was first recorded in 1234 with market rights granted in the early 14th century. The Sackville family held the manor for centuries before it passed to the De La Warr family in the 20th century. The town prospered during the 16th and 17th centuries thanks to Wealden iron and later gained a railway connection in 1880, now replaced by the Cuckoo Trail cycle path.
Landmarks include the parish church of All Saints, Heathfield Park mansion with its Gibraltar Tower memorial, and Braylsham Castle, a modern house built in medieval style.
Cultural life features the Heathfield Silver Band, active since 1880, and the Heathfield & District Bonfire Society, which revived bonfire celebrations in 2019 after a 62-year gap. Annual events include the Heffle Cuckoo Fair and the Heathfield Agricultural Show. The town supports education through Heathfield Community College and several primary schools, alongside sports facilities such as football and rugby clubs.
