About Aldington, Kent

Aldington is a village and civil parish in Kent’s Ashford District, situated eight miles south-east of Ashford town. The village is perched on a steep escarpment overlooking the Romney Marsh and the upper Stour, with Aldington Knoll nearby offering panoramic views towards the English Channel and Dungeness. This knoll, once a Roman burial barrow and later a beacon, is steeped in local legend and was part of an 18th-century Anglo-French scientific survey.

The parish covers 3,400 acres, including a portion of Romney Marsh and the Royal Military Canal’s northern bank. It lies within the North Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Old Romney Shoreline Special Landscape Area. A Roman road runs through Aldington, now partly followed by the B2067, linking Hythe to Hamstreet.

St Martin’s Church, dating from the 12th century, features a 16th-century tower that served as a landmark for seafarers. Nearby are the ruins of an Archbishop of Canterbury’s palace, once expanded by Henry VIII. The village has a rich history, including ties to the notorious Aldington Gang of smugglers who operated from the Walnut Tree Inn, signalling across Aldington Knoll.

Notable residents have included novelist Ford Madox Ford, playwright Sir Noël Coward—who wrote *Cavalcade* at Goldenhurst Farm—and musicians and comedians such as Noel Redding and Julian Clary. The village also has connections to Erasmus of Rotterdam, who briefly served as rector, and Elizabeth Barton, the ‘Holy Maid of Kent’, born here in 1506.
