Dymchurch, Kent

Dymchurch is a coastal village in Kent, located on Romney Marsh, five miles south-west of Hythe. Its history is closely tied to the sea, with a sea wall dating back to Roman times protecting the fertile marshland. The village played a role in the Anglo-French Survey of the late 18th century, linking observatories in Greenwich and Paris.

The village is known for its Martello towers, built in the 19th century as coastal defences. Tower 24 is now a museum open to the public, while others have been restored or maintained. Nearby, the Dymchurch Redoubt, a fortification from the same period, adds to the area’s military heritage.

Dymchurch’s sandy beach holds a Blue Flag award and is popular with visitors. The flat surrounding countryside is ideal for walking and cycling. Attractions include holiday parks, an amusement park with rides such as a Ghost Train and Log Flume, and the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, a steam railway that runs through the village.

The village is famously linked to the smuggling tales of Doctor Syn, created by Russell Thorndike, who set his novels in the area. A biennial celebration honours these stories, reflecting Dymchurch’s rich cultural connections.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church, dating from around 1150, is a notable Norman building with later extensions. The village also has a war grave commemorating a local soldier from the Second World War. Dymchurch retains a quiet charm despite its popularity as a seaside resort.
