Smeeth, Kent

Smeeth is a small village and civil parish located in Kent, about four miles east of Ashford. The area is predominantly agricultural, with much of the land dedicated to farming. The village lies near Mersham Hatch Park along the A20 road, which connects Ashford to Folkestone.

A notable feature of Smeeth is the church of St Mary the Virgin, which contains Norman architectural elements such as the south doorway, tower archways, and chancel. The churchyard is the resting place of Edward Knatchbull-Hugessen, 1st Baron Brabourne.

Three major east-west routes run close to the centre of the parish: the M20 motorway, the A20 road, and the High Speed 1 railway line that links to the Channel Tunnel. Residential development is mainly found north of the motorway, with woodland providing a natural buffer along the northern borders adjoining Brabourne Lees.

The parish is also characterised by numerous headwaters feeding into the East Stour river, which forms its southern boundary. Historically, the area had a railway owned by the South Eastern Railway (SER), reflecting its connections to regional transport networks.
