About Ruckinge, Kent

Ruckinge is a rural village and civil parish in south Kent, located about 5.5 miles south of Ashford along the B2067 road between Hamstreet and Hythe. The parish stretches nearly three miles and is characterised by a mix of farmland and woodland, with roughly a quarter of the land covered by trees. The community includes two settled neighbourhoods, separated by woodland but connected by a road, with the smaller settlement of Bromley Green holding much of the parish’s woodland.

St Mary Magdalene’s Church is a notable landmark, a Grade I listed building with origins dating back to the 12th century, possibly built atop an earlier Saxon church. The church features Norman doorways, medieval choir stalls, and a tower housing five bells, some of which date back to the 16th century. The village itself is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and has a history linked to the Anglo-French Survey of the late 18th century, which measured the distance between Greenwich and Paris observatories.

Ruckinge’s landscape includes the headwaters of the East Stour river, rising in sandstone hills to the west, and remnants of The Weald forest. The area south of the Royal Military Canal has been grassland since Roman times, lying just above marsh level. Historically, the parish was associated with smuggling on Romney Marsh and has connections to local cricket history.
